STUDENT LEGAL SERVICE RE-OPENS TOMORROW FOR 2013
The Student Legal Service will re-open its doors to all members of the community seeking legal advice tomorrow (March 5th). The Student Legal Service provides free, confidential legal advice and referrals to people who may otherwise be unable to consult a lawyer.
Now in its second year of operation as an advisory service, the Student Legal Service is operated by senior law students and is supervised by practising solicitors from the Tenant’s Union, Women’s Legal Service and the Environmental Defender’s Office.
President Theo Kapodistrias said the Student Legal Service isan important community service as both itfills a gap in the legal services market and helps train budding law students in crucial skills.
“We are providing access to justice to the community, particularly to university students and allowing law students to gain more practical skills with client interviewing and giving legal advice under supervision.”
Mr Kapodistrias said the Student Legal Serviceplans to continue to develop and expand in 2013 to provide even greater benefits to the wider community.
“The Student Legal Service will grow by developing more services for the broader community”, he said. “We want to be able to assist as many people as we can.”
With the rising costs of legal services meaning many members of the community cannot afford legal advice, the Student Legal Service is playing an increasingly important role in providing access to justice in Hobart.
