I welcome the announcement today that the bulk of Australian forces will be out of Afghanistan by year’s end.

We should have been out of there long ago, and the pressure’s now on the Government to get the rest of the Australian Defence Force out of Afghanistan.

Only when all foreign forces are gone from that unfortunate country will it be allowed to find its natural political level, whatever that might look like.

Australia must now shift its focus to providing Afghanistan with humanitarian aid and nation-building aid because that is the way to foster genuine stability there.
