Greens discuss new Disability Care laws with Hobart families

Posted on

Parents and students will hear today about this week’s passage of the new Disability Care laws and how they will translate into new choices for school leavers.

Australian Greens spokesperson for Disability Services, Senator Rachel Siewert, is in Hobart to meet with students and parents from the Timsbury and Southern Support Schools. She will brief the families on the passage of the NDIS legislation (now called Disability Care) in Canberra this week.

Senator Siewert will discuss an important Greens amendment to the laws that broadens the capacity of the National Disability Insurance Agency to advocate on behalf of people with a disability.

“Our amendment ensures the agency is able to undertake advocacy in areas not funded by the NDIS but that are crucial to ensuring people have improved accessibility in important areas of life,” Senator Siewert said.

“This important clause means that the agency can help push for better services in mainstream areas such as education, employment, housing and public transport — all fundamental aspects of living in our society.”

Senator Siewert and Greens Candidate for Denison Anna Reynolds hope to hear from families about their expectations for how the new laws will provide new choice and opportunities, particularly for school leavers.

“There are still rules to be drafted and the community’s experiences and expectations are really useful input for those designing policy,” said Anna Reynolds

Tasmania is hosting the launch site for Disability Care for young people aged 15-25.
