Devonport consolidation plans should force rethink to split Shearwater in two

Posted on

The launch of the ‘Living City’ plans to consolidate, rather than fragment the city of Devonport should force a rethink of plans to split Shearwater in two, said Guy Barnett spokesperson of the Save Our Seaside Village (‘SOSV’) group today.

“The Devonport City Council, the Living City Community taskforce and others have acknowledged the mistakes of the past to fragment the city of Devonport.

There is no better example to cause a rethink of plans to create two town centres at Shearwater.

Independent town planning advice says future development should occur in the existing Shearwater town centre, not in a new town centre 700 metres up the road. We need development that will enhance our town and enrich our community, not an out-dated proposal that will split Shearwater in two and divide our community.

We all know that poor town planning can have long term and adverse consequences. Now is the time to learn from the past. These important lessons we hope will send a message to the Latrobe Council, the developer and all those pushing for two town centres at Shearwater, Mr Barnett concluded.
