A UK focus on excellence in Tasmanian leadership
In a rare opportunity to focus on their own leadership skills, Tasmania’s volunteer managers will today
receive expert training on leadership as Volunteering Tasmania welcomes British trainer, facilitator,
coach and enabler, Sue Jones to Tasmania.
Tasmania has over 155,000 volunteers who give 49,000 hours on any given day to around 5,000
organisations across the State, highlighting the importance of strong leadership and management for a
sustainable volunteering sector.
Ms Jones, who leads a project in the UK on ‘Excellence in Volunteer Management’, is in Tasmania to
conduct an interactive full day workshop focussed on developing leadership skills in managers of
volunteer organisations.
“Managers often become frustrated about the way their role is perceived within organisations and their
need to influence more effectively to demonstrate the impact of their work,” Ms Jones said.
“It is vital that just as much attention is given to managers in leadership positions in order to create a
strong volunteer team.”
Ms Jones hopes managers come away from the workshop realising how vital their role is within their
organisation, and that it is ok for them to focus on their own learning and development needs.
“By taking time to focus on ‘you’ as a leader, you will discover more about how you learn, lead and
need to grow in order to become better at supporting and developing others,” she said.
Volunteering Tasmania CEO, Adrienne Picone said today’s event was a fantastic and rare opportunity
for Tasmanian volunteer managers to work on their professional development.
“The workshop will offer volunteer managers the chance to look at important skills and differences
associated with managing and leading,” Ms Picone said.
“Attendees will look at developing the skills needed to not only manage but offer effective leadership
and support to volunteers in order to produce the best results for their organisation.”
