Hobart light rail roundtable gets things moving

The Light Rail Roundtable held today at MONA was a great success and will help bring the project to reality, according to Bob Brown and Anna Reynolds who organised the event.

The Roundtable of more than 40 people met at MONA today, including David Walsh, the Mayors of Hobart and Glenorchy Councils, local businesses and community groups and representatives from all sides of politics and all levels of government, was co-hosted by Bob Brown and Anna Reynolds.

“The meeting was a very successful game-changer that brings a light rail project one big step closer,” said Dr Brown.

“The interest in this roundtable has been fantastic and while one meeting cannot lead to an immediate commitment to the light rail project, we hope it will be a positive step towards the day light rail is a reality for Tasmania’s capital city.” said Anna Reynolds.

The attendees at the roundtable agreed to a Communique (below), to send a lobbying delegation to Canberra and to meet as a group again.

Hobart Light Rail Roundtable 15 February 2013 COMMUNIQUE

We agree that Hobart Light Rail has the potential to transform our city: – to revitalise real estate development including housing through the northern suburbs, – to make it easier for all sectors of the community to get from and to the Glenorchy CBD and the KGV development, MONA and Brighton and to the city and Macquarie Point development, – to particularly help the elderly, the young and those with disabilities to be mobile and be engaged in the community, – to ease congestion and household transport costs by providing fast, efficient and affordable rail transport – to boost open space and opportunities for Tasmania’s creative arts and industries and importantly to cut greenhouse gases and make our capital city more sustainable for the future

We will continue to work together to help bring Hobart light rail to reality in the near future
