HANDS OFF REGENT SQUARE

Community Has Spoken

The Tasmanian Greens today reiterated their support for the Friends of Regent Square and likeminded George Town community members who are committed to preserving the history and heritage of Regent Square.

Greens Member for Bass, Kim Booth MP, today attended the Planning Commission meeting held in George Town to discuss the plan for a LINC Hub and Child and Family Centre to be built on the Square.

“The George Town Council seem determined to rezone this revered piece of land to enable the Department to acquire and develop it for their own purposes, against the wishes of much of the local community,” Mr Booth said.

“The Tasmanian Greens have continued to publicly speak out against the development of Regent Square for any other purpose than public recreation.”

“The community have spoken with petitions and signatures collected in the thousands tabled in Parliament to voice their concern over Labor’s plans to desecrate their historic place.”

“Towards the end of the 2012 Parliament year, on behalf of the Tasmanian Greens, I put up a Motion in the House of Assembly calling on the Minister for Health, Michelle O’Byrne MP, to abandon plans to build the CFC on Regent Square and to consider the alternate site which was so kindly offered free of charge by a generous local.”

“Should the rezoning of the land be approved to allow the development, the Greens will have no choice but to bring our Motion on for debate in Parliament.”
