Greens urge students to enrol to vote
Greens candidate for Denison, Anna Reynolds, will be joined by the Young Greens at the University of Tasmania’s Clubs and Societies Day to urge students to enrol to vote.
In this Federal election year, AEC statistics show that Denison lags behind the other Tasmanian electorates in voter enrolment.
Enrolment in Denison is 1.72% below the divisional average – the lowest out of Tasmania’s five electorates (see here for details).
“Denison is going to be a tight race and an important one nationally. It’s vital everyone who can vote is enrolled,” Anna Reynolds said.
In December 2012 the AEC reported that an estimated 22,920 Tasmanians were “missing” from the electoral roll and a large portion of these were young people and first-time voters.
“Voting is a right and a responsibility. We don’t want people to miss out on their chance to influence national decisions,” Anna said.
The Greens are helping to raise awareness about people’s legislated obligation to enrol to vote, and to keep their details current on the electoral roll. The AEC’s goal is to ensure at least 95% of eligible Australians are on the electoral roll at all times.
Anna Reynolds can be contacted on 0423 222 149 and is available for interviews at Clubs and Societies Day by the TUU Building in Sandy Bay from 2.30pm.
