A FOOD PLAN BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE
The Tasmanian Greens today commended the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance’s initiative of releasing a visionary paper in response to the Federal Government’s National Food Plan.
Greens primary industries spokesperson, Kim Booth MP, said that it’s important for communities to take back ownership of our food production and distribution processes and that The People’s Food Plan – Working Document makes a strong contribution to this space.
“There is a movement that is gaining momentum off the back of growing discussion around how our food is produced,” said Mr Booth.
“Awareness is growing in regards to the nutritional, economic, social, environmental and ethical implications of the food industry.”
“The AFSA is at the forefront of this movement in Australia and this latest document provides a strong argument against some of the negative trends that have developed within the food industry,” said Mr Booth.
“The National Food Plan, released by Minister Ludwig, basically panders to corporate interests.”
“The People’s Food Plan has credibility because it was written through a transparent, democratic process, not by a Government exclusively looking through an economic lens,” Mr Booth said.
Sandra Murray, spokesperson for AFSA and public health lecturer added, “The People’s Food Plan is about a fairer food system for all Australians, including many farmers, food processors, food retailers, health workers, entrepreneurs as well as we who eat the food.”
