Buy local on Australia Day
One of the best ways to celebrate this Australia Day is to purchase and enjoy Australian grown food and take a moment to thank any farmer you know for our fantastic fresh, clean produce.
The Australian Greens have warmly welcomed Choice’s contribution to the push to reform country of origin rules for food labelling.
“Last year when I introduced the Country of Origin Labelling Bill into the Senate, and when Adam Bandt introduced it in the Lower House, we received a lot of support from farmers, shoppers, and consumer advocacy groups.” Leader of the Australian Greens, Senator Christine Milne said today.
“When we released the bill we recognised the complexity, and actively sought feedback. More than anything, we wanted to reignite the public debate and need for country of origin food labelling reform, and we are pleased to have done that. We are continuing to work with key stakeholders to make our bill even better.”
“Currently the rules around the country of origin labels allow misleading claims and cheap imported food can masquerade as Australian grown and compete unfairly.”
“Country of origin labelling will be good for farmers, good for local processors, and good for consumers. It will provide more transparency so that shoppers can make an informed choice and a level playing field for Australian farmers and processors. The Greens are determined to achieve reform and we will work closely with Choice and other key stakeholders to put the best possible bill before the Parliament.”
“On Australia Day, it’s traditional to support our farmers and producers by buying local. This Australia Day, don’t just buy Australian –help us send a message to show that everyone wants a level playing field for our farmers and local processors, and the right to know where our food comes from.”
