Tasmanian charities benefit from record donation from IGA retailers

Posted on

In what has been labelled one of Tasmania’s largest giving ceremonies, the State’s IGA
retailer network today presented several worthy charities and community-based
organisations with more than $65,000 in donations.

Representatives from the various organisations were joined by Tasmanian Independent
Retailers CEO, Grant Hinchcliffe, who presented the donations on behalf of IGA retailers
statewide.

Mr Hinchcliffe said there were 86 IGA outlets throughout Tasmania, all of whom were
extremely proud to support so many worthy organisations that operated within their local
communities.

“IGA retailers across the State are supported by their local communities every day so it is
important that we give back to them accordingly and show our support for the amazing work
they do,” Mr Hinchcliffe said.

“A donation of $50,000 was made to the St Vincent de Paul Society, Hobart and Launceston
City Missions, Anglicare, Salvation Army and the Benevolent Society to assist in the vital
work they do for those in need of food, warmth, shelter and comfort.

“Legacy, an organisation that provides personal support and welfare for the dependents of
Australia’s deceased veterans, and the children’s cancer charity Camp Quality were the
recipients of a $10,000 joint donation.

“The Special Olympics also received $5,000 towards their sports training and competitive
events for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

“All the recipients have been overwhelmed by the donations, which form part of the IGA’s
ongoing commitment of $200,000 to charities and community organisations annually.

Throughout 2012, IGA has donated an estimated $200,000, believed to be one of the largest
public giving campaigns in the State. This doesn’t include the many thousands of dollars in
additional support provided on a regular basis by individual retailers and small business
operators under the IGA brand.
