Businesses up in arms at loss of Apprenticeship Subsidy

Senator Stephen Parry said that local businesses are just beginning to realise the impact Labor’s axeing of wage subsidies will have on their bottom line.

“As part of Labor’s desperation to find any possible savings at the Mid-Year Economic Fiscal Outlook, they have slashed the Support for Adult Australian Apprentices initiative,” Senator Parry said.

“Local builders are incensed as many have taken on adult apprentices as a result of the incentive, and have budgeted in the expectation they would have these funds available to them.”

The Adult Apprentice Subsidy provided $150 per week in the first year of apprenticeship, and $100 per week in the second year. The Subsidy being paid to the Employers for second year apprentices suddenly ceased on 22nd October.

“The fact that there was no fore-warning and builders were advised after it had been axed has added insult to injury,” Senator Parry said.

Senator Parry said that – when elected – a Coalition Government will be committed to ensuring that apprenticeship incentives are targeted to where the support is most needed.
