The battle for King Island

Posted on

Golfers on both sides of Bass Strait are being urged to put on their patriotic caps and battle it out for King Island.

‘Victoria versus Tasmania, The Battle for King Island’ will pit a Tasmanian team of golfers against a team from Victoria in Ryder Cup-style format, on one of the world’s greatest nine hole links courses.

“The locals have decreed that maybe Jeff Kennett’s idea of Tasmania merging into Victoria should be investigated,” said event organizer, and golf course developer, Greg Ramsay, from Launceston firm experienceConsulting. “They are initiating the debate by upholding their right for self-determination and allowing the golfers of Victoria and Tasmania to battle it out, by the sea, for King Island.”

On a more serious note, the event is also part of a wider plan to put King Island golf on the international stage and provide a much-needed economic boost to the island.

Mr Ramsay said King Island had potentially the greatest 9-hole golf course in the world.

“The rugged west coast of King Island is one of Australia’s idyllic golfing landforms. The course hugs a spectacular coastline. The bump’n’run of undulating fairways, endless ocean vistas, a clever routing and greens in great condition make this one of golf’s great venues and when the wind is blowing, this is one of the most challenging courses in the country, demanding creativity and strategy to plot your way to the hole.

“Tasmania has the potential to be the number one golf tourism destination in the Asia Pacific region, and King Island can be a big part of that.”

The Battle for King Island, to be held from November 16-18, will be limited to two teams of 15 golfers. There will be a mix of foursomes and singles matchplay, and the event will also involve feasting on the island’s rich bounty of seafood, beef and cheese, accompanied by a blind beer and wine tasting (Victoria vs Tasmania).

By playing on the course and to prove that King Island does indeed boast the world’s greatest nine hole course, participants automatically receive free entry to the Dunes at Michigan USA, long regarded as the world’s best nine-hole golf course, and access to the UK’s Royal Worlington and Newmarket, considered Europe’s finest nine-hole course. There will also be a tour to the Cape Wickham Golf Development Site, where plans are underway to build an internationally renowned 18 hole course and luxury ecolodge.
