Outstanding Vocational Students to be Recognised

Senator for Tasmania, Senator Catryna Bilyk, is encouraging local schools to nominate students for the 2012 Australian Vocational Student Prize.

“The Australian Vocational Student Prize provides an important opportunity for schools to acknowledge students who have undertaken a VET program or an Australian School-based Apprenticeship as part of their TCE,” said Senator Bilyk.

“The AVSP focuses on vocational achievements and a student’s personal attributes, such as determination, commitment and the leadership role they play in their school and community.”

Students can be nominated by their school principal, teacher or a Vocational Education and Training Coordinator and, if one of the 500 successful nominees, receive a certificate and are awarded a $2,000 prize.

“This award is the vocational equivalent of the academic Australian Student Prize, another initiative aimed at recognising the achievements of students and their schools,” Senator Bilyk said.

“It is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of students who have chosen a practical pathway through their senior studies and gained invaluable skills that make them more employable.

“Developing industry-specific skills through avenues such as these helps students with planning and pursuing their chosen career path, and the AVSP is a great way to recognise these endeavours.”

Nominations close Friday 7 December 2012. For more information, including on how to nominate, visit: www.deewr.gov.au/avsp.
