GREENS MOBILE APP DIALS UP ACTION ON DANGEROUS CYCLEWAYS

Tasmanian Greens Infrastructure spokesperson Tim Morris today was today joined by Australian Greens candidate for Denison Anna Reynolds to launch a new ‘Bike Blackspot App’ as part the Greens’ ongoing campaign for improved cycleway funding.

“The Greens today launched an innovative free ‘Bike Blackspot App’ that we are encouraging Tasmanian cyclists to download , which will allow them the opportunity to record in real time any local hazards they’ve identified whilst in transit,” Mr Morris said.

“This software would allow cyclists to send photographs and descriptions of poor and unsafe cycling conditions to a website, which would be in turn forwarded to the Tasmanian Infrastructure Minister.”

“We are also calling for a commitment from the State Minister, David O’Byrne, that Department of Infrastructure funding under the ‘Blackspots Program’ will also be invested in fixing bike black spots.”

“More than $13 million has been available to the Tasmanian government between 2008 to 2014 to improve road safety in places there have been serious accidents or places likely to contribute to accidents.”

“We’re concerned that these funds might not have gone toward fixing bike black spots, and we are calling on the Minister to make this information public.”

“The information direct from the cyclists will be gold – it’s been estimated that the vast majority of bike accidents don’t make it into police statistics,” said Mr Morris.
