EVERY CONTROVERSY RE-STATES CASE FOR POLITICAL DONATIONS REFORM
Nick McKim MP
Greens Leader
Sunday 1 July 2012
The Tasmanian Greens today reiterated the need for political donations legislation, and said that the Liberal Party remains compromised on the issue.
Greens Leader Nick McKim said there is a strong need for a real-time and transparent political donations regime in Tasmania.
“Voters deserve to know who is giving how much to who and when but that is information the opaque system currently denies them,” said Mr McKim.
“The Liberals are trying to make political mileage out of political donations, which is the height of hypocrisy. Voters will see the double-standard behind their grandstanding.”
“At the end of last year, Labor supported the Greens’ motion banning political donations from Big Tobacco, which was great but is just the start.”
“Thanks to years of campaigning to reform political donations in the State, and thanks partly to our power-sharing role in Government, the Department of Justice is now looking at this area, which the Greens believe is critical to improving our democracy and voters’ faith in it.”
“The Greens will keep the pedal to the metal to ensure any proposed reforms are root-and-branch and go the distance, rather than resulting in a politically convenient compromise.”
“Political donations reform would help end these games of one-upmanship by shining a much needed light on the still murky area of political donations and campaign finance,” said Mr McKim

Meaningful Reform of political donations laws would mean the death of Tasmanian politics as we know it.
John Gay declared that his company kept a significant number of people out of the prison system; the same would probably be true of politics, as the two overlap.

It would be really interesting to see which big companies benefit from their donation.

Hi Nick,
Graeme Woods gave the Greens $1,670,000.
Must have got a few favours for that eh?

Political parties and donations go hand in hand. We get the political parties that someone pays for, politicians may have good intentions when elected but they are controlled by the party and the party is controlled by donations. Scrap donations and the parties and go for a better system.

bob Palendrome…At least the donation given to the Greens was declared. That’s the problem here, I think, the fact that it was broken into smaller parts so it didn’t have to be declared. I am not a Green or any other colour, but I like to see the rules applying to everyone.
