Tasmanian Government assistance to Pig Farmers
Malcolm Cowan, Secretary of the Tasmanian Island Pork Alliance, welcomed the announcement that the government will assist pig farmers to transition out of using sow stalls. He said that affected producers in Tasmania have been grappling with how to undertake this conversion and still remain in business.
“It is an expensive exercise for these small, family-owned businesses. TIPA is heartened by the Government’s offer of practical assistance and we will continue to work with the Government to achieve a successful transition in the shorter timeframe that was originally proposed”.
Mr Cowan said that in 2010, Australian Pork Limited members committed to voluntary phase out of gestation stalls by 2017. “That was in direct response to shifting consumer demands. Tasmanian pork producers are not afraid of change and are always prepared to meet market requirments.”
