Saved jobs at TEMCO welcome news for Northern Tasmania

The announcement today that from 1 July BHP’s TEMCO plant at Bell Bay will reopen and reinstate all permanent employees is very welcome news for Northern Tasmania, Senator Stephen Parry said today.

“The George Town community was devastated when BHP suspended work at the plant in March to review its economic viability. So this news will understandable bring much relief to the community and in particular to those workers and their families directly involved.

“The plant, which employees 330 permanent staff and also provides employment for many more contractors, is very important to Northern Tasmania and I welcome the comments made by BHP’s Manganese Australia president Bryan Quinn that changes made during the review should allow TEMCO to return to a globally competitive position”, he said.

“The next dose of good news for the region and State would be confirmation that the pulp-mill will go ahead, creating further jobs and increasing economic prosperity,” Senator Parry concluded.
