Greens Alderman Jeremy Ball today announced his intention to run for Deputy Mayor of Launceston City Council (LCC), releasing a report to residents and ratepayers summarising his action on LCC over the past two years. Alderman Ball said that he wanted to make a change from the cycle of elected representatives making promises each election, to one where they produce evidence of the work they have done for the community.

“It’s been an honour to represent the community as an Alderman for the last couple of years and now I’m asking residents to look at my record and judge whether I’m worthy of their vote to become Deputy Mayor.” Alderman Ball said.

“I have released a report today, summarising what I have achieved on Council since my election in 2007, as I believe actions speak louder than words and the community can make a better judgement based on evidence of those actions, rather than promises for the future.”

“I think if you want to be part of the leadership team on Council you need to be able to show you have taken a leadership role and hopefully this report goes some way towards doing that.”

Alderman Ball said he would be releasing campaign initiatives over the next couple of weeks but that his overarching vision for the Launceston municipality was for it to become the most sustainable region in Australia.

“My vision for the Launceston municipality, which I know is shared by many others, is for it to become known as a leader in sustainability.” Mr Ball said.

“We are blessed with renewable energy opportunities; a diversity of small and medium sized businesses; we have the university as a major resource for research and development, and a sustainable tourism industry that injects over $220 million directly into the Tamar Valley economy every year, so we are perfectly set up to develop practical examples of economic, environmental and social sustainability.”

Alderman Ball, who was elected in November 2007 said that his candidacy for Deputy Mayor was a natural progression following his active involvement in major issues affecting residents and ratepayers over the past two years and added that he felt the role of Deputy Mayor was where he could best represent the interests of residents of the municipality over the next two years.
