The City of Moreland in Melbourne is doubling rates for commercial gaming venues, that is clubs and hotels with poker machines. It says it’s a way of clawing back some of the money that’s drained from the community by gambling.

And to encourage what it sees as less damaging forms of social activity, the council is also halving rates for community organisations – sporting clubs and the like – that are pokie free.
