I strongly support Jonathon Green’s proposed code. It simply isn’t good enough to allow snide comments & innuendo to rule. To rely on vitriol and rumour instead of sound reasonded debate is to undermine the power of the site. In the end all you have left is two sides throwing mud at each other and no-one else listening or participating. The reason mainstream media has endured is because it at least aspires to a code of ethics (even if it often falls short) which gives its readers, listeners or viewers some degree of confidence in the material. There is also the matter of fairness – just because you don’t like someone or something isn’t reason to then allege corruption, for example. Finally, it is a protection for the site editor/moderator who, in the end, is legally responsible for any defamatory comments. Read more, Comment here
