Costello cannot have an ambition to be the PM or he should not have made such a mistake.
WHY is Peter Costello unsuited to be the Leader of the Opposition and therefore not going to contest?
The alternative Prime Minister represents Australia as surely as the incumbent.
To holiday in a country under military rule, democratic process suspended and pressure being applied by the Australian government [among other Commonwealth countries] for a return to elections, demonstrates either a lack of understanding of the national interest and Australian values or a failure to care.
Costello cannot have an ambition to be the PM or he should not have made such a mistake.
As he must be considering many matters perhaps he needs to bask before he decides on the latest non-parliamentary job offer.
Nelson’s run is over, not able to gain traction, unable to lead a disparate bunch over the issue of climate policy, he will only remain whilst the factions circle and the numbers gather.
Even if the Liberals elect Turnbull leader their is a need for all to fall in behind policy and the leader.
The divisiveness and power struggles of Labor held it back until Rudd finally settled matters and created a cohesive team.
Whilst the Liberals fail to present as an alternative government and oppose for the sake of it, Labor has no choice but to turn to the Greens and independents for support and that result is surely anathema to the Liberals supporters in business.
If the Greens then behave responsibly and have wins with climate and other policies the need for the Nationals and Liberals to coalesce will become irresistible as the Australian polity shifts ground and leaves the rabid right chewing rugs in a phone box, their worst fears for coal fired power stations moving to reality because of their failure to recognize reality.
The Liberals need to clearly recognize the political dangers of inaction on climate policy.
Regardless of the scientific evidence Australian’s who change their vote are convinced action needs to be taken and business stands with them.
Those members who retain seats but fail to understand this new real politic should be thanked for their support and retired from the Parliament, their best by date having passed into the dust of history.
As hard as you might try, every drought, every heavy storm and each bushfire season will stand as undisputable evidence in the eyes of voters.
The same voters see the Arctic melting, natural systems failing such as the algal outbreaks at the Olympics, animals threatened with extinction, forests being destroyed and coal reef bleaching.
Only a party united behind action on climate will be taken as a serious contender for government.
And as the manifestations of climate instability become stronger so will the demand for action.
phill Parsons remains singularly unimpressed with the old parties reactions so far. The Rudd government hasn’t finalized its policies yet so it could pull a rabbit out of the hat but on performance that appears unlikely and a real outcome for the stupid monkey depends on the Greens and independents skills.
Failure to negotiate will only delay matters and lead to an election, double dissolution or ordinary, it matters not, the polls are clear and business is united.
