THE Australian Council of Heads of Schools of Social Work have established the People’s Inquiry into (Immigration) Detention and will hold an information session and Public Hearing in Launceston.
The information session will be held on September 27 and will provide information about how people can participate in the Inquiry.
The public hearings will be held on October 21 and 22.
The purpose of the inquiry is:
– To enable people to tell their stories and give evidence of their experiences in detention
– An open Inquiry into the practices and procedures of immigration detention facilities
– To collect these stories and evidence and make it available to people.
It is expected that people giving evidence may include:
Former and current immigration detainees
Professionals who have had contact with detention or detainees
Relatives and friends of detainees
Visitors to immigration detention
People who have worked in immigration detention or for DIMIA
Advocacy groups and service providers.
