THE Hon David Llewellyn has called on available nurses to contact the Royal directly in an effort to address chronic staffing shortages.

In the Royal Hobart Hospital, the only tertiary referral centre in the whole of Tasmania, elective surgery has ceased and beds are closed.

Does the Minister think all those ‘available’ nurses will hear his plea and come running knocking at the door?

I don’t think so.

As Minister for Health, David Llewellyn would be better served to look at the health of the hospital, the sick culture that is overseen by bureaucrats who never set foot in the workplace to witness the overcrowding, chronic understaffing, lack of leadership, lack of respect, lack of decision making, lack of resources and the unbelievable strain and pressure nurses, doctors, cleaners, catering staff, ward clerks and allied health services work in.

It’s not a happy place, our major health facility, as a matter of fact it’s desperately unwell and no amount of money thrown at it will change it.

Does he wonder why nurses are not banging down the door to work in this antiquated, third world facility, where leadership is actively discouraged, initiative ignored and bureaucrats rule from afar.

A health facility where nurses not only work double-shifts, but sometimes triple-shifts.

Yes, 24 hours in a row.

That is not healthy, for nurse or patient.

A medical catastrophe will occur soon, very soon.

Who are the advisors that are shielding him from the disaster that is the Royal?

Its prophetic content surely add further weight to the argument that the Lennon Government should forget a pulp mill and Ralphs Bay and concentrate on the Royal Hobart Hospital as a Project of State Significance …
