Like every other Tasmanian, I have been bombarded with adverts and editorials telling me how wonderful a Pulp Mill is going to be for us all. But where are the figures? Can someone explain to me how I am going to benefit from all this.
Dear Peg Putt
According to the Treasury, Tasmania will make a loss of $450 for each passenger that travels on The Spirit III from Sydney. This is because they are subsidising them to the tune of $2500 each and they only spend on average $2050.
Tasmania’s economic recovery?

I am amazed that Mr. Lennon has committed the tax payer to an enormous outlay for the continued Spirit 3 service to Sydney.
If he had done some basic research on the subject of peak oil, he would realize that it will make running a fast ferry to an unnecessary destination, a complete waste of money and eventually this service will grind to halt due to the high cost of fuel oil.
The tourist industry will wind down over the next 5 years to a virtual standstill again due to oil at a cost of at least $100 a barrel.
The cost of oil is not ever going to come down again.
Think again about this service please. The money would be much better spent on the ailing health service.
