The Taste … Was it value for money?
Some stalls were excellent value and some were atrocious.
The tempura mushrooms from the Huon Valley mushroom stand were a must (except who dropped the sugar in the soy sauce?).
Three stalls serving various sushis, some good seafood platters, some awesome dahl, some divine Tasmanian scallops, abalone (a first for the Taste, I think), and washed down with some delectable NV Brut from Stefano Lubiano.
There were still too many fried fish things though. We lucked in with a table under umbrellas on the wharf on our second visit, with glorious weather to boot.
Funnily enough, the first day we went, it was like visiting the Antarctic.
Ran into half the (Tasmanian) world, including Her Honour, Pauline Shelley, James Groom (who gets younger every year), David Laskey (who couldn’t keep the smile off his dial), and various politicians pressing the flesh.
Some of the street theatre was abysmal, and some was quite funny.
It is such a part of Hobart’s life now, I don’t think it will be going away.
But, to the organisers, how about cutting back on the deep fried stuff when handing out stall licences?
And some of the bain maries looked like they’d been there at the Taste since the year before.
And who was the handsome lad on the Fish Bar stand?
