End the ban on same-sex marriage
A rally will be held this Saturday in Hobart on to protest the ban on same-sex marriage that the federal government introduced four years ago this week. Rally organiser and community activist Rose Matthews said that it is up to the new government to change this unjust policy. ‘Why is the Rudd government continuing with this marriage ban when it is a clear case of discrimination?’
Twenty years ago Tasmanians protested against laws that outlawed homosexuality and in doing so were banned from having a stall at Salamanca markets; 130 activists were arrested during the campaign. This year the Hobart City Council is holding a reception to apologise for those actions.
Matthews continues, ‘It’s fantastic that the Council recognises that their actions were wrong. Unfortunately we’re still fighting against unjust laws, this time it’s the banning of gay marriage. How long will it take before the federal government realises that this too is wrong? All we want is for our relationships to be recognised as legitimate and to have the same rights as anyone else in the community.’
The rally will be held on Parliament House Lawns on Saturday, August 16th at 1pm.
