My friend who lives in the Huon Valley, Tasmania found this poor little creature today, initially thinking it was another road kill, but on closer inspection found it was all caught up in a plastic six pack holder.
I am sending this to you in the hope that you may have some suggestions on how to minimise this type of tragedy or can at least help to increase awareness about the risk of it.
My friend who lives in the Huon Valley, Tasmania found this poor little creature today, initially thinking it was another road kill, but on closer inspection found it was all caught up in a plastic six pack holder.
See her photos attached and her description below:
“The quoll weighed about half the normal weight of its buddies, so had been suffering for some time with the plastic tightly wrapped around it’s body behind the front legs and another loop of plastic twisted around one of the front legs as well, impossible to free itself. ”
This packaging should not be a made of closed* unbreakable* loops of plastic. If this cannot be effected or changed in the short-term, perhaps suppliers & retailers, government and environmental NGOs could inform/educate people of the problem & encourage everyone to cut the loops before disposing. (Acknowledging it is probably not a message that will easily reach someone who would throw it as litter in the first place).
Appreciate any suggestions/efforts/ you can provide to minimise this happening to more small mammals.
Thanks
Deanna Fleming
