STATE GOVT. MUST BE MORE PROACTIVE IN GETTING ALDI TO TAS.
Brighton Councillor Leigh Gray has today called on the State Government to explain what action it had taken to attempt to lure the ALDI supermarket chain to Tasmania.
“Battling Tasmanians are struggling with the increasing cost of living especially the rise in grocery prices and our State needs more competition in the supermarket sector to provide some price relief,” Brighton Councillor Leigh Gray said.
“The ALDI supermarket chain is a discount retailer that has around 167 stores in Australia in NSW, ACT, Queensland and Victoria but has not yet entered the Tasmanian market.
“It is time that the State Government ramped up its efforts to lure ALDI to Tasmania to provide some much needed competition and discount prices.
“Given the number of ALDI stores elsewhere in Australia there should be no reason why they could not set up in Tasmania.
“Obviously, I believe an ideal location for the first ALDI store would be in the Brighton municipality, but at the very least we need them coming to Tasmania to start with.
Mr Gray said he had today written to ALDI inviting the company to give greater consideration to Tasmania.
“I call on the State Government to understand that battling Tasmanians are hurting and to put a much greater effort in to attracting ALDI to our State.”

SUPPORT FOR CAMPAIGN TO GET ALDI SUPERMARKETS TO TAS.
Brighton Councillor Leigh Gray said today he had already received significant support for his campaign to lure the ALDI supermarket chain to Tasmania.
“I have had contact with numerous Tasmanians who are very keen to see ALDI come to our State and who have indicated their support for my campaign to get them here,” Brighton Councillor Leigh Gray said.
“This morning I have spoken with the State Opposition Leader Will Hodgman’s office who have indicated that Mr Hodgman is supportive of the campaign for greater competition and lower grocery prices in Tasmania. Mr Hodgman is a strong advocate of unit pricing which ALDI do.
“I have also written to the new Premier Mr Bartlett asking him to explain what the State Government has done to date to get ALDI to Tasmania and requesting it be more proactive on this important issue.
