Cosmopolis #1.5: Enlarged Intelligence, opening November 2nd in Chengdu, Sichuan Province in south-west China, presents artworks and programs by almost 60 artists and groups, exploring ecology, technology and the commons, and envisioning how we today may draw on intelligent technologies, as well as on ecological intelligence, to advance social values—rather than leaving capital to largely define the uses of these techniques and knowledge systems.

The Cosmopolis platform was launched by the Centre Pompidou in 2016 to highlight research-based creative practices that are rooted in a particular context yet engage in international conversations, reflecting on cultural translation and the situatedness of knowledge.

BOAA will be the largest ever showcase of living Australian artists, Biennale Of Australian Art (BOAA), is touching down in Ballarat this Spring between 21 September and 6 November, 2018. With 150 artists from across Australia and 65 curated solo exhibitions at 14 heritage venues, the six-week event will be a remarkable destination showcase of visual arts, live music, and the region’s food and wine.

MONASH GALLERY OF ART

This exhibition is the first in a series presented by MGA that profiles and explores the work of William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize alumni.

Valerie Sparks won the Bowness Photography Prize in 2016 for her work ‘Prospero’s Island – North East’ from the series Prospero’s Island (2016). Sparks creates magnificently beautiful large-scale works that entice the viewer with perfectly impossible landscapes. Each scene is meticulously constructed using her photographs of different landscapes, flora, fauna and taxidermied animals from museum collections. These composite images, which could never exist in nature, draw attention to concerns over the destruction of landscape, post-colonialism and globalisation.

This exhibition draws together key works, charting Sparks’s significant practice and hinting at the exciting, immersive and innovative installations that will come next.

‘The Bruny’ is a unique national art prize, focused specifically on painting that explores concepts of identity and environment, including the relationship between people and the physical world. In 2018, the specific theme of the prize is Art of Adaptation, which encompasses the way challenges such as climate adaptation are negotiated. Bruny18 is an initiative of the Bruny Island Foundation for the Arts, with the Kingborough Council it’s major Local Government partner.

In 2018 the judges are: ELIZABETH ANN MACGREGOR OBE Director, MCA, Sydney, FIONA HALL AO, leading Australian artist and JARROD RAWLINS, Curator, MONA.

The Tidal: City of Devonport National Art Award is a biennial, $15,000 acquisitive award. Artists residing in Australia are invited to submit 2-dimensional artworks that reflect on tidal – the natural, cultural, personal or political concerns related to the sea and coastal regions.

Employing philosophies that the two artists share – a focus on timber as the primary material in their sculptural practices, and a dedication to detail and labour in their construction – Static explores time and energy within an artist’s practice as an aspect of the completed artwork.
