ON the 5th of June, 2007, Telstra announced a further round of job cuts to its workforce. These cuts included the complete closure of four call centres around the country – including the centre here in Launceston which employs 253 staff.
This move has been widely condemned by those working at Telstra along with the CPSU, politicians and the broader Launceston community.
Job losses of this size in a community like Launceston will hit working families and the local economy hard. This is a direct attack on Telstra workers and shows the contempt with which Telstra regards regional communities.
There are 141 Telstra staff and 112 Labour Hire staff in the Launceston call centre who are all set to lose their jobs by February next year. While staff directly employed by Telstra will be eligible for redundancy packages, the casual Labour Hire staff (some who have been doing Telstra work for 7 years) will walk away with nothing.
What you can do:
Voice your concern to the people who can change this decision. Write an email, fax or letter and let them know the people of Launceston do not accept this decision! Keep the call centre here!
