Turnoff Thetelly
I call on all readers, who have witnessed what has happened in Tasmania with the push to build a pulp mill anywhere and under any conditions, dictated by Gunns and the CMFEU and Lennon, aided by the Liberal Party, with the people to be affected by this mill pushed to one side and labelled as “greenies” or “Wilderness Society supporters” or “yuppies” in order to negate their legitimate right to protect their homes and environment and businesses, from a stinking, polluting pulp mill, to register a protest vote in the federal election in 2007.
Read Peter Garrett’s media statement, with the support of Kerry O’Brien, under the heading “Statement On Proposed Tasmanian Pulp Mill” of March 22, including the following statements:
“Labor notes there has been a thorough community consultation process to date.
…. . .
While understanding the time pressures on the assessment process, Labor considers it is important that this process allow for public comment in the future.”

These weasel words are either a deliberate misrepresentation of the facts, carelessness, stupidity, or Garrett and O’Brien consider the electorate of Bass to be unworthy of true representation by the ALP. The ALP, at both state and federal level is a sham, having sold out to corporations, with nothing to differentiate the ALP from the Liberals.
Read the labelling tactics of the Forest Industry Association as its spokesman attempts to discredit Dr Raverty and suggest that all ‘Tasmanians Against the Pulp Mill’ members are aligned with the Wilderness Society.

TAP members have been forced to take time out from their busy lives in order to fight for their community, businesses and home amenity, when this is what we elect government members for — we shouldn’t have to fight our own representatives, as they in turn spend public money supporting a greedy corporation and use bullying tactics on the RPDC, a government body set up specifically to examine all issues surrounding development and planning.

Government and legal protection of proper process has been withdrawn from us, at the same time as public money has been spent to prop up the pulp mill push, regardless of expert opinion from scientists and the medical profession that the proposed mill would be in the wrong place, in a heavily populated area, with roads not built to carry increased log truck traffic.
Vote for an Independent or a Green in the coming 2007 federal election — even if you have never done so before. Your vote gives you the only voice you have that is unlikely to be corrupted in this otherwise corrupt state.
