For too long, development here has been held back by demands that every town has to have everything that other centres have. It’s meant wasteful duplication, to the point that the expense has prevented Tasmania from having some top-notch services — simply because of political demands that if Hobart has one (of whatever), then Launceston, Burnie and/or Devonport must have one, too. This “Tasmanian disease” has infected everything from health and education to transport, sport, local government and tourism.
