 Street’s violent Twitter rant degrading to women

 Hodgman should not accept candidate into his team

The Liberal candidate likely to replace Paul Harriss in the Tasmanian Parliament should be unacceptable to the Hodgman Government after his misogynistic Twitter rant in which he highlighted his degrading attitude toward women.

Shadow Minister for Women Lara Giddings said the Premier would be showing extremely poor judgement if he welcomed Nic Street to his back bench after the Franklin candidate’s behavior on social media while he was working as an adviser to new Minister Adam Brooks.

In his Twitter post, Mr Street said:

“No. 1 rule on Hobart to Melb flights? No seat reclining. Yes bitch in 21D I’m talking about you. #shouldhavegotasmacktothehead”.

“That’s simply disgraceful,” Ms Giddings said.

“Mr Street should be thinking long and hard about his suitability to represent Tasmanians in the House of Assembly, just as the Premier should be thinking long and hard about accepting him as part of his government.

“Violence against women is a scourge on our society and Mr Street can’t fob this off as a silly or impulsive mistake – this was a deliberate public statement from a person who understands how social media works.

“He may have apologised last year but he admitted that he had posted the Tweet in a moment of frustration.

“In that moment he showed his true colours – can Will Hodgman guarantee that if Mr Street comes under pressure we will not see this ugly side of his personality again?

“There’s nothing funny about it. It’s shocking in its level of vitriol.

“The Premier has taken a stand on domestic violence and violence against women – Mr Street’s elevation to the Parliament would make a mockery of that.”
