FEDERAL Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson has welcomed news of more flights into Hobart.

Mr Hutchinson said that yesterday’s announcement by Qantas of a substantial expansion of its services into Hobart was a positive for the State’s economy and the tourism industry.

Qantas will add an extra 2420 seats a week to and from Hobart from March next year to meet growing demand.

The extra seats translate into 11 more flights to and from Sydney and Melbourne bringing the national carrier’s number of Hobart flights to 46 a week.

The increase in flying will mean an increase in jobs, Mr Hutchinson said.

There will be an additional 10 pilots and 15 cabin crew needed at the Hobart base to operate the flights which will almost double the existing workforce.

“The flow-on effect of these sorts of decisions is huge,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“It will increase visitor numbers which in turn builds investor confidence and boosts business generally.”
