All the same, there is a widespread belief that the Government has not honoured the pledge it made in the election campaign: “Tasmanians can be certain that we will work hard to attract and retain the health professionals we need to care for you. We will continue to invest in the equipment and facilities we need to provide the best possible care for Tasmanians and their families.”
A stark contrast in priorities was demonstrated when, on the same day as a memo was made public warning the Royal’s cancer unit was in danger of collapse because of budget cuts, it was also revealed the cost of the Elwick racecourse development had blown out from $14 million to $27.1 million.
It was being demanded of the Royal that it not only stay within its budget but that it make cuts of 5 per cent — an amount which would be more than covered by the $16 million taxpayer contribution towards the Taj Mahal racecourse development.

But the Labor Party also knows Mr Quick holds one more ace up his sleeve. Push him too far, or disregard his wishes too much, and there is no reason Mr Quick could not decide to resign early from federal politics, well before next year’s Federal election is even called. Mr Quick, who turned 65 in June and will have been in Federal politics for 5000 days in November, would not even have to worry about standing as an independent. A by-election for the marginal seat of Franklin, perhaps held late this year, would be the last thing the Federal ALP would want.
