12 July, 2006.WELD ACTIVIST ARRESTED AS ACTION REVEALS GOVERNMENT / FORESTRY TASMANIA SILENCE ON FOREST FURNACE PLANS
Weld Valley activists today locked down the Southwood site, in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, to highlight a Government and Forestry Tasmania veil of silence surrounding ongoing plans for a wood-fired power station fueled by old-growth forests.
“One activist was arrested today in Tasmania’s southern forests, whilst locked on to the gates of the Southwood Industrial complex. An activists car was also vandalised by workers,” Huon Valley Environment Centre spokesperson Will Mooney said.
“The State Government claims that only “waste” wood will be burnt at Southwood. This is a ruse to hide the fact that hundreds of thousands of tonnes of old-growth forest timber , which can’t be sold as wood chips, will be burnt to generate dirty power,” Mr Mooney said.
“Under Forestry Tasmania’s own definition, even “fallen trees” can be termed “waste”. They have fudged the definition so that any timber left on the ground after logging can be utilised,” Mr Mooney said.
