Tasmania’s racing industry has been strong in its condemnation of Minister Jeremy Rockliff’s decision to break a core promise and cut stakes money.

Shadow Racing Minister Scott Bacon said trainers and owners are speaking out about the inevitable consequences.

“Leading trainers, owners and officials have been clear that the cut to stakes money will mean job losses in the industry,” Mr Bacon said.

“The Government has put the industry in a very difficult position, despite the Liberals’ promise to boost stakes money across all three codes.

“The Liberals promised the industry it would be better off, not worse off.

“Jeremy Rockliff has been sitting on a secret report since October last year, refusing to release it publically.

“The industry needs to be put on a sustainable footing but it also needs to be vibrant and world-class.

“The Minister needs to think very carefully about the ramifications his decision will have for those who rely on racing to earn a living.”
