The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to working with the community towards our long-term vision of zero deaths or serious injuries on Tasmanian roads.

Earlier this week, we launched the Road Safety Advisory Council’s development of the next 10-year road safety strategy, which will be based on our Towards Zero goal.

Today, I am pleased to announce a new Community Road Safety Grants (CRSG) program to support local councils and other community groups in their efforts to help reduce road trauma and save lives.

Developed by the Department of State Growth in consultation with local councils, the new program will provide funding for both small and medium to large projects, with $600,000 allocated from the Road Safety Levy over the next three years.

Councils, community groups, schools and other eligible groups will be able to apply for funding of between $500 and $25,000 for evidence-based road safety projects.

Projects funded under the CRSG program will be aimed at:

• actively promoting road safety using safe system principles;
• raising awareness of localised road safety issues;
• targeting unsafe road user behaviours; and
• educating road user groups and communities at risk.

Replacing the Community Road Safety Partnership program, which ceased on 1 March, Community Road Safety Grants will help promote road safety messages to more Tasmanians to prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

Grant applications will be assessed twice a year, with the first round of applications closing on Friday 11 September.
