Independent Senator for Tasmania Jacqui Lambie has urged veterans to take part in a survey created by veteran, Angus Sims, who will use the results to keep the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) accountable.

“Mr Sims, a 30-year-old East Timor and Iraqi veteran, noticed too many veterans were falling through the cracks at DVA, with many mental and physical health issues going unsupported.

In response to his own experience and many others’, Mr Sims developed a survey to look at DVA’s treatment of their clients.” said Senator Lambie.

Mr Sims said the system was particularly not working for younger veterans.

“At times, the process that DVA put clients through when submitting claims can take months and in some cases put undue stress on the client, especially if it is a psych related claim – often making the client worse off,’’ Mr Sims said.

“This survey is being conducted outside of DVA and is separate to a survey conducted by DVA recently. The result will be used to find out where DVA is excelling and where it needs to improve. I will make sure that the findings will then be submitted to the Senate Inquiry and the media.” said Senator Lambie.
