The Liberal Government’s target of 50% when it comes to the representation of women on boards is a good start, but remains aspirational.

Shadow Minister for Women Lara Giddings said if the Government was serious about gender equity it would introduce a quota.

“The Victorian Government has taken the lead and introduced a quota, there’s no reason why Will Hodgman’s government can’t do the same,” Ms Giddings said.

“A target of 50% by 2020 is too easy to avoid.

“Women are underrepresented on government appointed boards in Tasmania, especially in paid positions.

“We need to take affirmative action to address the imbalance now, not just hope it corrects itself in the future.

“There are hundreds of capable women in Tasmania who would be suited to roles on boards if given the chance.”
