The Bob Brown Foundation has released poll results today showing over 3 in 5 Tasmanians support the Tarkine being listed as Australian National Heritage.
“Huge public support for protecting the Tarkine is driving our growing national campaign. Listing 450 000ha as Australian National Heritage will provide economic, environment and employment benefits for Tasmania’s North-West region,” Bob Brown stated.
“The Australian Heritage Council conducted extensive research and recommended the Tarkine be listed as Australian National Heritage in 2010. The former Federal Government ignored this advice and only listed 4% of the recommended area, leaving great swathes of the Tarkine open to mining and logging. The current Federal and State governments have continued this negligence, failing to provide any meaningful protection of the Tarkine”, Bob Brown Foundation Campaign Manager Jenny Weber stated.
Lonergan Research conducted the poll for The Bob Brown Foundation, asking Tasmanians, ‘Do you support or oppose the Tarkine being listed as Australian National Heritage?’ The results were that 63% supported listing and 37% opposed it.
