FEDERAL Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson has welcomed Social Services Assistant Minister Mitch Fifield to Deloraine this morning to officially open independent living units constructed near the Kanangra Hostel.
The Federal Government has contributed nearly $1.2 million towards the St Mark’s Moriarty Street independent living units built in response to community demand in the Deloraine region.
Mr Hutchinson said he was impressed that Aged Care Deloraine had responded so well to the needs of its older community.
The St Mark’s complex of independent units has been built in several stages after the first 10 units constructed adjacent to the Kanangra Hostel proved so successful.
The 14 new units in Moriarty Street officially opened today by Mr Fifield have helped meet a growing demand in the region for more independent living for older people.
They were occupied soon after construction and there is a long waiting list for similar accommodation.
Mr Hutchinson congratulated Aged Care Deloraine on this latest initiative which created work in the region during construction and modern, ongoing, demand-driven accommodation for the community.
“This is innovative thinking at its best to cope with the needs of older people in our community,’’ Mr Hutchinson said.
“The Aged Care Deloraine model is one of which the organisation can be proud – it is leading edge design for this fast growing sector of the community,’’ he said.
