NEW FUNDING for NRM South will enable the natural resource management organisation to undertake important environmental restoration work based on local priorities, says Federal Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson.

Mr Hutchinson said that the Federal Government was strengthening its commitment to protecting Southern Tasmania’s natural environment with today’s funding announcement of more than $5 million over the next three years.

NRM South will manage the funding and work with local groups to improve the way that they deliver sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation in the region.

“The funding will allow the local community including farmers, fishers, the Aboriginal community, other volunteer groups, councils, business, industry, research, education and government partners to undertake important work based on local priorities,’’ Mr Hutchinson said.

“NRM South plays a pivotal role in helping communities in the area to identify priorities for environmental action and sustainable agriculture.

“Farmers, landcare and community groups know what works best for their farms, their local landscape and their community.”

The National Landcare Program funding will:
• Support an annual natural resource management community grants program and encourage the uptake of sustainable management and innovative practices in Southern Tasmania.

• Help conserve, better manage and protect threatened species.

• Work with community and key partners to deliver a regional program focused on increasing awareness and generating positive outcomes for Southern Tasmania’s coasts, catchments and waterways and the species they support.

• Build on work to reduce the spread and impact of pests on the region’s important natural places.

• Support the development of Aboriginal enterprises, training, knowledge transfer, land and sea planning and on-ground works.
