FEDERAL Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson today welcomed a federal and state government decision to work together to improve Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage area.
The decision was confirmed yesterday with the Federal Government’s commitment of $10.2 million for the identification, protection, conservation and rehabilitation of the area.
The funding will be provided by the Federal Government to the State Government for increased and ongoing management responsibilities in the area added to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area in 2013, much of which is in the Lyons electorate.
The funding includes a one-off payment of $3.2 million next financial year to address identified priority areas such as road safety and biosecurity concerns included managing the spread of invasive species, pests and pathogens.
Mr Hutchinson welcomed the funding which also provides $575,000 to undertake further study and consultation with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community to develop a more detailed understanding of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage values of the area.
