National Volunteer Week Awards for outstanding achievement!

Each year during National Volunteer Week, Mersey Community Care holds a luncheon to celebrate the outstanding commitment that our wonderful team of volunteers make throughout the year. During the luncheon a Certificate of Recognition from the Devonport City Council is awarded to every volunteer and this year Devonport Mayor Steve Martin was in attendance to present the volunteers with their certificates.

During his presentation speech Mayor Steve Martin said “There is no dollar value that can be measured against the work volunteers complete in the community and many organisations would be unable to function without the assistance from volunteers.”

In addition to the certificates, the organisation has developed an award system that recognises volunteers who achieved either 5years, 10 years, 20 years or 30 years of service, with Mersey Community Care.

This year three volunteer’s from Mersey Community Care, each of whom has completed 30 years of service with the organisation, were surprised and delighted when they received a 30 Year Award to acknowledge their voluntary contribution.

Carol Beattie, Jan Burtt and Carol Jones have clocked up a combined total of 90 years of service to Mersey Community Care and are all still volunteering their time to support our clients.

Each received their award in front of 110 volunteers and guests and special guests, who attended the annual luncheon, which was held on Friday the 18th of May at the Axeman’s Hall of Fame.

During the award ceremony, General Manager, Ken Fitzpatrick said “It is an incredible achievement that three of our volunteers have dedicated 30 years of their life to provide services for the care of our clients and an achievement that we are all very proud of.”

Mr Fitzpatrick went onto say “Our organisation is very lucky to have such a great team of volunteers who give up their time to assist in the delivery of our much needed services and we thank you all for your support”.

Special Guests, Devonport Mayor Steve Martin, Senator Anne Urquhart, The Hon. Mike Gaffney MLC, Federal Member for Braddon Brett Whitely MP, Devonport Alderman Alison Jarman, TAHPAC Project Officer Lynne Jarvis and Harry Atkinson from Work and Training, took the opportunity to mix with the volunteers during lunch and the Awards Ceremony.

Senator Anne Urquhart said “I am so impressed by the great work the Mersey Community Care volunteers do in the community and I will be more than happy to offer any support I can to this worthwhile organisation.”
