The Rotary Clubs of Claremont, North Hobart in partnership with Glenview Community Services shipped 70 beds to Kumundini Hospital in Bangladesh on Saturday 15 November 2014.
The Kumudini Hospital in Bangladesh has 750 beds for mainly sub-acute care. It provides quality and affordable health care to the poor in nearby communities. Patients who cannot pay are provided free care. Also, each year, the hospital produces around 200 nurse-midwives and 100 female medical doctors. Thus, the Kumudini Hospital is an important health care provider for the poor and a training provider for health care professionals in Bangladesh.
Lucy O’Flaherty CEO of Glenview Community Services said “Glenview is delighted to partner with Rotary to support the Kumudini Hospital by donating 70 beds which will replace makeshift beds at the hospital.” Ms O’Flaherty went on to say “As an aged care provider we are very proud to support Kumudini Hospital that is doing great work to help those less fortunate in their community and to know that these beds will be put to good use in a developing country.”
Derek Chambers, President of North Hobart Rotary said “This is a continuation of a previous shipment of beds to the Kumudini Hospital as part of a Medical & Family Support project started 2012 by Dr. Jenny Kerrison, a Rotarian and a Tasmanian midwife.”
Craig Stringer, President of Claremont Rotary Club said “Claremont and North Hobart Rotary Clubs will meet the cost of shipping the container of beds to Bangladesh. Mr Stringer also said “We are hopeful of being able to repeat this project again next year.”
Mr Stringer said “The quiz night is being held to raise money to cover the cost of shipping the beds last year and if we are able to raise enough to help cover the cost of a shipment of further beds planned for later this year.
