“Pippa Smith and Miranda Suit from Safermedia are in Australia right now to share their story of how the UK is making the internet safer for children,” FamilyVoice Victoria director Peter Stevens said today. “Teenage girls are presenting to doctors with ‘sex injuries’ after being coerced by partners to perform degrading sex acts, fuelled by imagery they have seen on porn.
“Only Britain seems to be doing something about it. In the UK, porn is no longer a censorship issue – it is a public health issue. See for example: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/mother-tongue/11554595/Pornography-has-changed-the-landscape-of-adolescence-beyond-all-recognition.html .
“Ninety per cent of UK internet service providers (ISPs) now offer a cleanfeed service. Harmful websites – including those promoting self-harm, anorexia, suicide, terrorism and hardcore pornography – can be blocked on mobile phones and tablets as well as home computers,” Peter Stevens said.
“Aussie parents need this too!”
Peter Stevens said Pippa and Miranda will be speaking in Melbourne tonight at 7.30 pm in the Oakleigh Baptist Church –along with new Victorian MLC Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins, who will share her own story.
Pippa and Miranda will also speak in Hobart tomorrow on 16 May, and in Sydney next Wednesday, 20 May
