In honour of the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli this year, Kingston Beach RSL Sub Branch is changing the way they conduct the Dawn Service. This year will be a spectacular memorial event held on Osborne Esplanade along the Kingston Beach beachfront between Beach Road and Ewing Avenue. The Dawn Service will be conducted from a WW2 DUKW amphibious vehicle parked on the beach. A number of Sea Scout boats will hold off the beach on mooring buoys during the Service to represent the landings at Gallipoli. White doves to symbolise “Peace” and to represent the use of pigeons in wartime communications, especially in WW1, will be released at the unveiling of a permanent Commemorative Monument. Sound recordings of actual interviews with WW1 diggers will be played over the PA system, and a special commemorative event program keepsake will be provided to attendees.

The event will mirror the service held at Gallipoli starting at 6am with the Band and choir entertaining from 5.30am onwards. We advise those attending to get there early and to assist a shuttle bus service will be running from 4.30am onwards from the stops on Channel Highway (opposite the Council Chambers) and Church Street. Arrangements have been made with local Cafes to open for Breakfast, Food Vans and Coffee Vans will be in attendance. The public are advised that regardless of the weather the Service will take place. The Mayor, Mr Steve Wass and Ms. Julia Walters, a student and a past winner of the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize, will lay a single wreath to remember all those who suffered at Gallipoli. After that, organisations and the public who wish to lay a wreath or place floral tributes are more than welcome. Attendees are most welcome to bring candles should they so wish. A large gathering is expected so people are urged to arrive early.
