Shadow Health Minister Rebecca White has thrown her support behind the national taskforce to combat the drug ice.
Ms White said it’s encouraging to see the issue being taken seriously at a national level.
“Unfortunately the Liberal Government here in Tasmania has tried to play down the impact of crystal methamphetamine on the community,” Ms White said.
“Michael Ferguson accused opposition parties of making ice a political “plaything” during the last sitting of parliament.
“I hope Mr Ferguson changes his attitude now the Prime Minister has made it a priority.
“Last month’s Australian Crime Commission report painted an alarming picture of the scourge of ice in the community and the toll it’s taking on addicts and their loved ones.
“Ice is too readily available and is having a devastating impact on families across Tasmania.
“Of course the justice system has a role to play, but this also needs to be treated as a health crisis.
“We need to ensure that people are informed about the dangers of ice before they risk trying it and becoming an addict. Prevention is the best way to protect people from the harm of ice.
“In addition the Liberal Government here in Tasmania needs to make sure communities are adequately equipped to deal with the fallout from drug addiction for those people who need help now.”
